tawa sinpin

noun: person, someone, anyone

Non-native words are always treated as adjectives in Toki Pona. This includes given names. Simply saying a person's name, by itself, means nothing. In order to refer to someone named Nala, you have to use Nala as an adjective modifying jan; literally, you're saying "person who is Nala" or perhaps "Nala-ish person".
